Behind the Creation: The Great Leap (to a New Year)
Inspiration
When I saw the photos of the Zodiac Goat stamps on The Straits Times newspaper, I thought the characteristics of the Goat were well captured in caricature form; playful, energetic, jovial and adorable like plush toys.
Since Kawada has released the Mother Sheep & Baby Lamb kit (NBC-128) to celebrate the new Lunar Year, I wondered if it would be possible to build a Nanoblock model of the traditional (mountain) Goat from the kit as a challenge.
Conceptualization
The idea was very simple; the Goat was in the midst of leaping from a rocky slope to the other slope, symbolizing the start of a new year.
To be honest, I didn’t give much thought on fleshing out the concept as I knew it would change in the building process due to technical limitation of the Nanoblock building system.
Building I started building the Goat’s head first, but gave up shortly when I couldn’t get a slightest idea of which block to put on. I got back to building after putting the project aside after a day.
I had to alter the design constantly when I ran out of blocks or certain sections of the Goat started to fall apart due to weak clutching. Although the kit has a lot of 2 x 3 blocks, but these ran out quickly when I was building the Goat’s body.
Whatever blocks left were used in building the legs. There was a lot of trial and error and experimentation involved in getting the posture I wanted without the legs falling apart.
As for the idea of adding the second rocky slope, it was axed as I realized a goat ‘floating’ in the middle of the two slopes might be better on a 2D painting than in a 3D form. Positioning the Goat onto the ‘right’ spot with clear holders was a nightmare as it kept falling forward but eventually the holders held it in place after some trial and error and lots of patience.
Despite the obstacles in the building process, I enjoyed tinkering and seeing what possibilities I could get with a limited set of blocks.
